I came across this sad picture, Irish Emigrants Leaving Home - The Priest's Blessing (1851), on the website of the New York Public Library. How many times was this scene repeated as Irish people left during the Famine, never to return? It's a blessing that your ancestors may have received on their journey to the U.S. or Canada.
